About Assembly Tools

Table assembly tools matter more here than experience: a slate-bed table is levelled to tenths of a millimetre, and without the right kit it simply cannot be done.

The basis is a machinist level — a builder one has nowhere near the resolution. Then slate bolt wrenches, a torque wrench, shims and wedges to align the sections, plaster or wax to fill the joints, an upholstery stapler and cloth stretchers. On a three-section table the order matters: frame and feet first, then slates from the centre outwards, cushions last. Assembly is best done by two people given the weight of the sections.
