About Cloths
Billiard cloth wears out faster than any other part of a table and it sets the speed of the game. Worn cloth with bald patches by the pockets bends the path of the ball and ruins even a well-levelled table.
There are two kinds. Napped woolen cloth (Simonis 860 in its pool version, or cheaper club cloths) is slower and more forgiving — the usual choice for eight-ball and home tables. Worsted cloth (Strachan 6811, Hainsworth Precision) is smooth, very fast and required in snooker. Weight is given in grams per square metre: 400–500 g/m² for club play, 700 g/m² and up for tournament tables. When buying, allow extra for the cushions — a 9ft table needs roughly 3.5 × 2 m. Cloth is fitted together with new rubber, so see also cushions, assembly tools and table parts.
