About Joints

Cue joints and pins decide whether a butt and a shaft will connect at all — the first thing to check before buying either half separately. A cue with a different joint is not worse, it simply does not fit.

The common standards are Uni-Loc (a quarter-turn quick joint), radial (a self-centring thread), 3/8×10 and 3/8×14, plus 5/16×14 and 5/16×18. Snooker has its own class of 3/4 and 1/2 joints, where the split point along the cue matters too. This section holds pins and inserts, adapters that let you screw in a shaft of another standard, and protectors that shield the thread inside a case. Replacing a pin is lathe work, so in practice you order it from cue service. See also shafts and butts.
